Solo exhibition in Hellissandur, Iceland
“Echoes” is showing untill the 19th of July as part of the Glóandi Jökull Glass Festival in Hellassandur, Iceland
When visiting Hellissandur for the first time in march 2025, I was immediately drawn to the glacier, and was amazed how every time I looked at it, it appeared slightly different, changing with the light, the weather, or simply my mood. I learned of the saga of Barður, this half giant half man, who came to the peninsula with the first settlers, and in grief after he thought he had lost his daughter, he wandered of into the glacier to live in solitude, and became sort of a gruesome protective spirit of the place.
With this exhibition I wanted to capture this variability of the glacier, by repeating the same motif on glass and paper, both figuratively and sculptural.
I decided to create a graal – a glass vase made by engraving layers of color – ‘Barðurs cry’, and build around that a variation of depictions as echoes of this first attempt at interpreting the paradoxical qualities of the Snæfellsjökull.
‘Pyrografie, 1-6’ are six direct prints made by the hot glass embryo during the proces of blowing up the graal piece.
‘Snæfellsjökull 1-8’ are eight linol prints – a technique that in some ways is very alike the one of glass engraving; in both cases you work by irreversibly removing matter, to create the finished image.
‘The veil 1-5’ are 5 vertically prints repeating the same motif in black and white, exploring how reproduction can change the starting point, and across from that you will find ‘The Glass Curtain’, which challenges you to look out at the glacier itself though the blurred veil made of rectangular pieces of recycled glass.
Lastly you will find the ‘Mountain 1-3’, a sculptural exploration of the same graphic lines, which are made during my brief stay here in Hellissandur in the first week of the festival. These pieces are made with assistance from Louise Lang and Selina Weber.
